How to Plan a Holiday Gift Budget (and Enjoy December)

Set a total, split it by person, and track gifts from idea to wrapped, so the holidays feel joyful instead of rushed.

The holidays are wonderful, and also a lot: gifts, cards, food, decorations, travel. A little planning in the fall makes December much calmer.

Start with one total

Decide on the total you want to spend on the season. Include more than gifts:

  • Gifts
  • Food and hosting
  • Decorations
  • Cards and postage
  • Travel and events

Split gifts by person

List everyone you'd like to give a gift to and give each person a budget. It's easier to stay on track with "30 for my brother" than with one big number.

Track every gift from idea to given

A simple status for each gift keeps your head clear:

  1. Idea
  2. Bought
  3. Wrapped
  4. Given

When someone mentions something they'd love in July, write it down as an idea. Your future self will thank you.

Watch spent versus remaining

After each purchase, update what you've spent for that person and what's left. If one gift costs more than planned, you can adjust another before the total runs over.

Don't forget the cards

Keep a list of who gets a card, and tick them off as you send them. It saves the "did I send one to the neighbors?" moment.

Make it a tradition

Save your list after the holidays. Next year you'll have a head start: last year's names, budgets and ideas.

Our Christmas Gift Tracker tracks every gift by status, shows spent and remaining per person, covers other holiday costs and includes a card list and a countdown. It's reusable every year.

Want the math done for you? The Christmas Gift Tracker Spreadsheet does the totals, charts and tracking for you.
